1. Look for safety hazards. Make sure family members and pets are in safe areas. Remember, fire, smoke and water damage can present Life-Threatening safety concerns that must be addressed.
2. Find your insurance policy. This will usually give you information to help process your claim faster. Call your insurance broker or use the 800 number on your insurance policy to report your claim. Report as accurately as possible what the cause of damage was, and how much of your property was affected. Record Your Claim Number! Follow their instructions carefully. Your insurance company is there to help you!
3. Start a folder . Keep all pertinent information in one place. This will help you keep organized.
4. Preserve and protect your property. All standard property insurance policies state that you, the insured, are authorized and required to take prudent action to minimize your loss. This may or may not be a recoverable cost, but it is in your best interest to act quickly.
